My five-year-old is the best negotiator I've ever seen. 

Somehow, just this morning, I went from telling him he couldn’t bring a whole sheet of dinosaur stickers to school to allowing him to 1) wear one sticker and 2) bring another for a friend — even though stickers aren’t allowed at school

How, I’m thinking, does a 5-year-old negotiate himself into an intricate compromise with a much older and more experienced adult?

I think the answer comprises two parts. 1) He’s a kid, so he is still socially fearless. 2) He has a natural talent for it.

But, what about the rest of us?

Anecdotal and empirical evidence would suggest many of us are uncomfortable at best with negotiation. In fact, according to a recent study by Linkedin, 40 percent of U.S. employees don’t feel confident in their negotiation skills, while one quarter admit to never having negotiated at all. And that’s just in the workplace!
